Discord

Discord was made as a place where gamers can get together an play together, but it has evolved to be used for much more than that. Discord has become a platform where anyone can easily create a group and hang out with their friends.

How does it work?
Discord allows users to create "servers" where other users can be invited to join. Once a user joins a server, they can chat in several different channels that are created by the owner of the server. The use of channels allows multi-threaded communication so that conversation chains are not derailed by a completely different topic.

Creating a server
These steps go over how to create a Discord server where your group can collaborate.

Step 1: Click the plus icon on the left side of the screen

Step 2: Either choose a template, or start your server from scratch. For the purposes of this guide, I'll select "Friends"

Step 3: Discord might want to know more specifics, so in this case I chose "For me and my friends"

Step 4: Give your server a name and click the Create button

Right out of the gate, Discord give you several helpful tips to get started using your server to it's full potential.
You can invite friends, give your server an icon, or send your first message in the chat. You'll also notice Discord pre-populated some channels for you to use in the left side-panel. It included some text channels and even some voice channels where users can hop in and enjoy some chatter.
This is a nice start for your server, but what if you wanted to add another channel? It's simple! Just click the plus sign in the Text Channels drop down and enter a name for the channel.
You can even decide to make the channel private and only visible to users with specific roles. This is an advanced feature and goes beyond the scope of this guide, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I hope that this blog has helped you make a decision on whether or not to use Discord in you next group. Thank you for reading!
